FAQ's

What is a kegerator?

A kegerator is a beer dispensing appliance, an appliance that has been outfitted with draft beer dispensing equipment to pour our keg beer. The word kegerator is a general term for an appliance that is either specifically manufactured to hold a keg or has been converted to fit a keg or kegs.

How long will a keg last in my kegerator?

How many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop? The life of a keg is a difficult question to answer because people rarely keep a keg long enough for it to spoil. In short, as long as oxygen doesn’t make its way inside the keg it will never spoil. If a keg remains on a CO2 draft beer system it is impossible, or maybe just “extremely unlikely” that oxygen will get inside of the keg. So, in theory, a keg of draft beer will last forever.

How much assembly is required with my kegerator purchase?

Our “low cost” kegerators require that the customer drill one hole for the shank in order to mount the faucet and screw in two self-threading screws to mount the drip tray. From start to finish, the “low cost” kegerator takes roughly one half-hour to build and install your kegerator. All necessary instructions are posted on our website in the “Instructions” section of the site. Estimated production time is 30 minutes.

Sanyo beer dispenser units require significant assembly. Everything needed is included with the unit. Assembly involves mounting the casters with a screw gun (drill), mounting the chrome rack on the top using small predrilled screws, mounting the chrome draft tower, and assembling the draft equipment. Estimated time for production is 1 hour.

The “crème de la crème” kegerator come almost fully assembled. Setup requires mounting the draft arm tower in pre-drilled holes using simple screws and assembling the draft beer dispensing equipment. The kegerator arrives virtually fully assembled. The tanks we ship are always empty, so the tank must be refilled to dispense beer. (See below for tips on refilling tanks). Estimated time for assembly is 20 minutes.

Assembling the draft beer equipment is straightforward and can usually be done by simply referencing the online instructions. Should you encounter any difficulties, KegSmart customer service is just a phone call away.

Where can I fill my CO2 tank, and how much does it cost?

Consider checking the following sources: home brew shops, gas wholesalers (although sometimes they do not deal retail), welding shops, or large liquor stores. These locations will often offer a CO2 refill service.

Cost ranges region to region and usually depends upon demand. Typically, expect to pay $18-25 to swap out a 5 lbs. CO2 tank. Filling 10 or 20 lbs tanks are not much more expensive. Because CO2 is abundant, the cost consists mainly of a service charge for filling the tank.

What are the differences in gas regulators?

The old saying, “you get what you pay for,” holds true for draft beer dispensing equipment. 90% of our customers purchase the economy or Tap-Rite economical regulators and are completely satisfied. The remaining customers are usually draft beer savvy or have worked in the beer industry. Anyone who understands the importance of true gas readouts and regulation levels spends the extra money to invest in a precise gas regulator. In our opinion, the CO2 regulator is the most important component of the draft beer system.
